Bridgwater Fair is known locally as St Matthew's Fair and is traditionally held on the last Wednesday in September and then carries on for 4 days ending on the Saturday. It was originally started as a sheep Fair and indeed sheep are still sold there to this day on the Wednesday Morning.

This is also the day when the Romanies bring their ponies to be sold privately at the site. There is also an extra area in St Matthews field where the street traders come to sell their goods on the Wednesday only. Traditional Fair Ground rides can be found in the Field from Wednesday through to Saturday and is reputed to be the biggest in the West.
